Welcome to The Bakken Museum's new e-newsletter.  In an effort to make our e-news more user friendly, we have switched formats.  This format will give you the latest news, events and links quickly and easily.

SUMMER SCIENCE DAY CAMPS

Don't miss your child's chance to build his or her own take-home invention in the Museum's Student Workshop using lights, drills, switches, circuits, batteries, buzzers, motors and more.  Campers also learn science-based magic tricks, and explore science through creative dramatics, group games and building challenges.

If you can think it, you can make it at The Bakken Museum!
 
Camps are Monday - Friday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. for one week.
Cost is $245 per camper per session. 
Scholarships are available for those who qualify.

DREAM IT, DO IT

The Earl Bakken Science Program is a weekly workshop in which kids and teens learn The Bakken's four step invention process -- think it, make it, improve it, show it -- and turn their big idea into a reality in our Student Workshop with mentors from science and engineering fields.  At the program's end, participants share their inventions with family, friends and museum visitors.  Hurry!  Spring session starts April 7.
 
Spring Session:  Saturdays, April 7 - May 12
  • Explorers (grades 4 - 6): 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.; $125 per student*
  • Inventors Club (grades 7 - 9): 1:30 - 4 p.m.;  $155 per student*
  • Science Investigators (grades 10 - 12): 1:30 - 4 p.m.; $155 per student*

animated heart beat in time to your heartbeat, create songs using your heart's rhythm and more.

Enjoy Minnesota's spring weather as you explore three acres of outdoor bliss.  Find flowers, herbs, shrubs and trees used as medicine in the garden.  Read a book on a bench next to the Koi pond and fountain.  Visit the wetland, count the many birds and see Minnesota's State Flower, the Lady Slipper, in bloom.

10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Discover your inner scientist with friends and family during drop-in, hands-on activities every Saturday.  Activities change each month and may include building a heart that shakes, rattles and rolls, making a capacitor and searching the Museum for answers to a scavenger hunt.

For the price of regular admission, you can hear the stories behind our unique exhibits and have a hair-raising experience with a knowledgeable, entertaining tour guide.  Pre-registration required.  Call 612-926-3878 ext. 219.

Science Theater: Finding Frankenstein

Monday - Friday
Meet Mary Shelley, teenage author of Frankenstein and mother of science fiction.  Discover who she might be is she were alive today and how Frankenstein came to be during this 45 minute interactive, entertaining performance for groups of 20 or more.  Pre-registration required.  Call 612-926-3878 ext. 219.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Saturday, April 21, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
It's an Earth Day extravaganza!  Join staff from Minnesota Center for Book Arts and make your own book out of recycled materials.  Make a leaf rubbing with the Minnesota School of Botanical Art.  Learn about the water cycle from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.  Ride The Bakken Bike, make a garden-to-go, see artwork created from "found" materials and enjoy demos by teenage Future City Competition contestants.

Botanical HeArt

New exhibit opens May 12
You're invited to meet the artists and enjoy The Florence Bakken Medicinal Garden during the opening reception for Botanical HeArt, Saturday, May 12, 1 - 3 p.m.

Botanical HeArt is an exhibition of botanical paintings of plants used medicinally to treat heart ailments.  The paintings, created by artists from the Minnesota School of Botanical Art, will be exhibited May 12 through August 31.

Free Botanical Painting Sampler Class

Saturday, June 2, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1 - 4 p.m.
Learn basic watercolor techniques used in botanical art and finish a small painting.  Art supplies provided.
Maximum 10 people per class.  Call 612-920-2013 for reservations.

Wizards Day

Saturday, July 21, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Calling all wizards!  Buy a copy of the final book in the Harry Potter series from Creative Kidstuff and create a glowing wand to wave over the pages.  Meet owls like Hedwig from the University of Minnesota Raptor Center.  Enjoy "Science is Fun!" with the 3M Visiting Wizards and "Professor Sepoc's Potion Class."  Explore The Williams Collection and get a close up look at real props from the Harry Potter movies, including original drawings of the Nimbus 2000, a student quill and a prototype of Hermione's wand.

Eco-vention and Wizards Day activities are included with The Bakken Museum admission.  MELSA Museum Adventure Passes cannot be used for admission to Eco-vention, Wizards Day or other special events.
