Reichenbach, Karl Ludwig Friedrich, freiherr von, 1788-1869.

The odic force; letters on od and magnetism, by Karl von Reichenbach. Tr. and introd. by F.D. O'Byrne. Foreword by Leslie Shepard. [New York] University Books, 1968.

lxxii, 9, 119 p. 21.5 cm.

A German speculative scientist with an interest in chemistry and metallurgy, Reichenbach became interested in "sensitives" (usually women) from 1844 on and conducted numerous experiments on what today would be called extra-sensory perception. By the 1860s his experiments had led him to speculate on a universal force called the "odic force" that permeated all of nature and differed from electricity and magnetism. By means of "odic" light Reichenbach claimed to be able to photograph objects in total darkness. His results are difficult to explain--even on the assumption of fraud--unless the objects were feebly radioactive.
