Author of founding study on the histology of the nervous system, Purkyne was an important Czech pioneer in the physiology of vision. He described most of the subjective visual figures notably by those obtained by galvanic stimulation, the recurrent images, the entopic appearances from the shadows of the retinal vessels, the dependence of brightness of colour upon intensity of light, the choroidal figure, "digitalis rosettes" and "belladona radiations".
