Nagelschmidt, a German physician, introduced the concept "diathermy" to explain the creation of heat in the body by molecular agitation and oscillation caused by high frequency currents. He was the author of the first textbook on diathermy that eventually inaugurated a new era in the use of high frequency current. His prototype apparatus designed in 1906 used a 50 Hz power supply at 120 volts. The voltage was raised to 2000 volts by a transformer and four metal plate condensers were discharged across a spark gap.
