The author's extensive service as head of electro-radiology services in North Africa provided him with the experience and case histories for this study of the electrical reactions of the organs of the peripheral motor nerve system as a precise method of diagnosis. The data provides a basis for the choice of electricity, heat, light, x-ray, movement or massage as the appropriate physio-therapeutic treatment for specific problems.

An American neurologist and son of the famous William T. G. Morton, (the dentist who demonstrated ether anaesthesia at the Boston-Mass Hospital in 1846), Morton became a great promoter of static electricity for nervous ailments from 1881 on. He discovered "static induced current" that produced a faradic effect of agreeable sensations and muscle contractions by moving the discharging rods of the electrostatic generator slightly apart (3 mm.) The resulting current wave form was a series of single high tension pulses of low amperage. He claimed priority for the introduction of high voltage electrotherapy since his work preceeded Tesla's and D'Arsonval's. In 1899 he announced another new type of therapy using the Morton Wave Current. A negative discharging rod of an electrostatic generator was grounded and the other electrode was connected to the positive discharging rod and to the insulated patient. The patient was thus the source of departure of an Hertzian wave as each individual spark crossed the spark gap. Morton recommended the current for pain and the treatment of neurasthenia and locomotor ataxia. With the discovery of radioactivity in 1895, Morton also became one of the first American pioneers of radium therapy and he was one of the first writers on "cataphoresis" (ionic medication) publishing a text in 1898.
