Gasser was an American physiologist who made important advances in electrophysiology applying early vacuum-tube amplification technology to the study of conduction in nerve fibers. His work enabled E. D. Adrian to determine that conduction in nerves took place in pulses rather than continiously with the pulse repetition frequency proportional to the strength of the signal.

He pioneered research on localization of function in the brain by stimulating the cortex electrically and succeeded Richard Caton at Liverpool who in 1929 had first established the EEG as a diagnostic tool.
