iv, [3], 79 p. illus., 8 plates. 22 cm.
Provenance: Dedicatory inscription illegible dated 1903.
Finsen was a Danish scientist who founded the scientific natural and artifical light treatment. Using originally sunlight focused by glass and quartz lenses and filters to remove the heat rays and later a carbon-arc lamp with quartz lenses and filters of copper sulphate or methylene blue, Finsen successfully treated cases of Lupus vulgaris with ultraviolet light. These cases were first reported in 1896 in his famous paper "The treatment of Lupus by concentrated ultraviolet light." The following year the Finsen Medical Light Institute was opened in Copenhagen and in 1903 he was awarded the Nobel prize for medicine. This book reviews research on the physiological effect of light on tissues and the therapeutic use of ultraviolet light. Sequeira, a noted English dermatologist introduced Finsen's techniques into England in 1900.

Freund was an Austrian radiologist who pioneered x-ray therapy. In 1897 he experimented with x-rays to test their epilatory effect on a child seriously disfigured by an extensive hairy pigmented nevus on the neck and back. He concluded that both the length of individual exposures as well as the total length of irradiation had to factored in to avoid the dangerous results due to overexposure. Freund was also one of the first to experiment with radium in the treatment of skin cancer.
