Autointoxication and indicanuria, by Albert Abrams. New York, W. Wood, 1908.
6 p. 19.5 cm.
"Reprinted from The Medical Record, April 25, 1908."
An orthodox trained American physician with an MD from Heidelberg, and inventor of an electronic stethoscope, Abrams claimed on the basis of his "Electronic Reactions of Abrams" that disease could be diagnosed from blood samples with instruments called oscilloclasts or haemodimagnometers. By 1923, a year before his death, the controversial nature of his ideas had incurred the wrath of the medical establishment. Some forty years later, controversy still surrounded his ideas and techniques.

Abrams, Albert, 1863-1924.
New concepts in diagnosis and treatment, physico-clinical medicine, the practical application of the electronic theory in the interpretation and treatment of disease, with an appendix on new scientific facts, by Albert Abrams. San Francisco, Philopolis Press, 1916.
xvii, [1], 35 p. illus., 1 plate. 24.5 cm.
Chief exposition of "Electronic Reactions of Abrams" (ERA): disease was simply a dyscrasis in the body's electrical oscillations. These electrical oscillations varied according to the type of disease and their nature and degree were determined by the oscilloclast and haemodimagnometer. Treatment called for restoring the body's electrical oscillations to equilibrium.
Abrams, Albert, 1863-1924.
Papers, ca. 1908-1921.
8 boxes (ca. 1750 items) and 3 cases.
Approximately 75 miscellaneous items including bills, circulars, contracts, memoranda, membership lists and certificates, diagrams of apparatus, construction specifications, 11 family photographs (some identified), instruction sheets, and business cards, and 1025 pieces of typed and handwritten correspondence. All but about 50 pieces are dated covering the period 1909 - June 1921, the bulk of it from the years 1917 - 1920, and consisting almost entirely of letters to Abrams. Approximately 45 are personal, and most of these are from his sister, Flora A. Bibo, and her children. There are also carbon copies of 14 letters written by Abrams to family, most of them to his sister. Of the handful of other replies written by Abrams, most take the form of handwritten notes scribbled on the bottoms or backs of letters he received. Another correspondent Dr. J. W. King can be singled out who sent Abrams 55 letters over the period Oct. 1919 - May 1921.
Except for personal letters, topics included requests for information about or orders to buy Abrams book or to subscribe to or cancel his journal Physico-Chemical Medicine, requests for information about studying with Abrams or about his medical approaches, including orders to buy instruments, or letters discussing the design of specific instruments, notes or letters from patients discussing medical problems or paying bills, correspondence from other doctors discussing Abrams techniques and apparatus or detailing case histories, often accompanying a blood smear submitted to Abrams for diagnosis; legal and matters and financial investments. Also 75 miscellaneous items covering virtually all aspects of Abrams practice and business dealings. Correspondence arranged chronologically. Approximately 650 small envelopes containing blood smears diagnosed by Abrams' method; some contain correspondence from referring physicians.
Autographed and typed manuscripts of chapters to two books by Abrams, Spondlylotherapy, 1912 and New Concepts in Treatment, 1916.
The three cases contain i) Abrahms' business ledger, 1908 - 1912 with a few letters from lawyers and collection agencies; ii) two memorandum books for 1910 and 1919; iii) one autograph notebook corresponding to section of his Diagnostic Therapeutics, 1910.
