The beginning paragraph of the report of the Faculty/Academy Commission lists the names of the participants. (During the French revolution, two of them, Lavoisier, the brilliant chemist, and Bailly, met their deaths on the device named after another of the commissioners, Guillotin.) The report concluded that the magnetic fluid did not exist and that any cures attributed to it were probably the result of peoples’ imaginations, or of nature taking her course.
