Static Electricity Workshop
at The Bakken
The Static Electricity workshop is 75 minutes long. In it students will: • Follow in the footsteps of historical scientists by recreating
their experiments. • Engage in stories about the discovery of static
electricity.
• Participate in hands-on demonstrations and investigations
to make their hair stand up, confetti dance, and sparks fly.
• Discuss what static electricity is and how it
works.
• Learn about positive and negative charges, attraction
and repulsion.
• Discover the difference between insulators and
conductors, and how they are used in static electricity experiments.
• Make their own take-home replicas of a historical
static electricity generator and storage device to do experiments and
produce shocks, as well as an instruction sheet detailing additional
experiments to do at home or at school.
When you register you can order a Sparks and Shocks video on DVD to introduce the history and science of static electricity. This workshop meets the following K-12 Minnesota Academic Standards:
