The Bakken

The Static Electricity workshop is 75 minutes long. In it students will:

• Follow in the footsteps of historical scientists by recreating their experiments.

• Engage in stories about the discovery of static electricity.

• Participate in hands-on demonstrations and investigations to make their hair stand up, confetti dance, and sparks fly.

• Discuss what static electricity is and how it works.

• Learn about positive and negative charges, attraction and repulsion.

• Discover the difference between insulators and conductors, and how they are used in static electricity experiments.

• Make their own take-home replicas of a historical static electricity generator and storage device to do experiments and produce shocks, as well as an instruction sheet detailing additional experiments to do at home or at school.

When you register you can order a Sparks and Shocks video on DVD to introduce the history and science of static electricity.

This workshop meets the following K-12 Minnesota Academic Standards:

History and Nature of Science: Scientific World View
