Versorium
English?, mid-19th-century
The small versorium on the right, only two inches high, is part of a small cased set that also includes a compass needle. This allows the demonstrator to show the different actions of electricity and magnetism on brass and on magnetized steel needles. The larger versorium on the left, a comparative giant at three inches tall, is a modern version made at The Bakken for exhibits and demonstrations. Though the versorium is simple (a "compass" for electricity) it is surprisingly sensitive. The one on the left was displayed in a Plexiglas case, and its needle would point to visitors' hands as they rubbed them on the plastic case. |
