Simple Dip Circle
England, circa 1830

Simple Dip CircleA dip circle measures the angle the Earth's magnetic field makes with the horizontal, called the "dip angle". This is a very simple dip circle. It has no adjustment for leveling (it presumes it will be put on a horizontal table) nor does it protect the magnetic needle from outside influences like static electricity or breezes.

The needle is present in this picture, but is pointing straight up-and-down. It probably could use adjustment of its bearing points, careful balancing, and re-magnetization to be functional.

Simple dip needles like this are used for demonstrations and hobby-science rather than for serious work.
