Dip Circle
Philip Harris & Co., England circa 1900

Dip CircleA dip circle or dip meter measures the angle that the geomagnetic field makes with the horizontal, the "dip angle". The brass cap on top of the instrument covers a bubble level that allows accurate setup of the instrument using the three adjustable feet. This dip circle is a type used in lecture hall demonstrations.

This particular circle is of intermediate quality. It has a brass housing and glass windows, so the needle will not be disturbed by electrostatic forces or breeze. The scale is read by the naked eye.

Simpler dip circles would have the magnetic needle and protractor out in the open. More complex circles would have a larger, more accurate level; and they would use a magnifier to read the dip angle more precisely.
