The Direction of Earth's Magnetic Field

When you think of "direction" the compass often comes to mind. It tells a person, roughly and over much of the Earth's surface, which direction is North. But that's only part of the story. Left and right are all very well, but what about up and down? This is measured with a dip circle. At the (magnetic) equator, the Earth's field is roughly horizontal. At the magnetic poles, it is roughly vertical. In between, it varies. The strength of the field varies also; this is measured with a magnetometer.
