"Franklin
peint par la foudre"
(Franklin painted by lightning) Ducretet, Paris, 1880
This small press, only six inches wide, demonstrates the power of lightning. A stencil is pressed between paper and gold leaf. A discharge from a battery of Leyden Jars travels through the gold, evaporating it. The gold vapor draws Franklin's portrait on the paper as it flashes through the stencil's cutouts. (The image and text on the stencil are shown reversed here.) |
