There is Something Here for Everyone

The Bakken is a place where opposites attract. For artists and scientists, young and old, and everyone in between, volunteering at the Bakken is a truly electrifying experience.

We believe that every child (and every adult!) is a scientist at heart. Volunteers at the Bakken help bring science to life for young people, their families, and other museum visitors in an informal, inviting and unique environment.

There's no place like it!
The Bakken specializes in the history of electricity and magnetism, with an emphasis on applications in medicine and the life sciences. We use history, literature and the arts to explain science and illustrate its human aspects. Volunteers help make this happen.

If you're willing to give us your time, enthusiasm and imagination, we'll provide orientation and any special training you need. The Bakken offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities to match your interests, your skills and your schedule.

Inventor's Club Mentor
Mentor Inventor's Club students as they design and build their own inventions! Coach, problem-solve and inspire creative thinking. Use your skills and knowledge to help students through the invention process. The Bakken workshop is the perfect place to help young inventors to turn their ideas into reality. Key duties: help students identify projects that they can design and build in 6 weeks; work with Bakken staff to expand the interests and skills of students; answer student questions, attend all the 2 hour Saturday shifts in a six week session. Training will be provided.

Museum Education Volunteer
Adult volunteers are needed for our innovative hands-on science workshops and/or exhibit tour programs for our grades 4-6 field trip program. Must enjoy working with youth and have a desire to learn! Volunteers assist Bakken staff in providing positive science experiences for kids. Tuesday through Saturday, shift times vary and include daytime and evening shifts. Training is provided. Please contact the museum for more information.

Family Science Saturday Volunteer
This program provides families with an opportunity to explore science in a fun, inviting, and hands-on setting. Volunteers are friendly individuals of all ages who enjoy working with young people and their families. Family Science Saturdays occur every Saturday.

Other Opportunities

Volunteers
help out in many other ways.
For example, they greet visitors, help in the museum store and assemble take home kits for field trip students. Volunteers are also needed to help give tours of the exhibits, house, and medicinal garden. Let us know about your interests; there's something here for everyone.

The benefits you receive will keep your batteries charged.
The satisfaction of helping young people get excited about science and its role in our lives is one of the many benefits of working as a Bakken volunteer. Our volunteers also receive:

 Free admission while volunteering
 Recognition at special receptions
Invitations to exhibit openings, receptions, lectures and other special events
Behind-the-scenes, guided tour of the Bakken
